Textual Analysis.

Apply the concept of genre to one of your coursework pieces.

  • Understanding of concept.
  • Use of specific examples from our coursework.
  • Use of theory / issues / terminology, focus on the question.
  • Analysis and exploration.
  • Academic style.
  • Real media examples.
INTRO.
  • Short brief over view of what our coursework is, MYA's music video.
  • What genre is it? Maybe a couple of inspirations. Our 'Love Now' video is POP.  Briefly mention how we looked at the VAMPS all night video, with the point of view concept.
  • Explore the concept of genre: style of a piece, way of categorising and marketing a piece to an audience.
PARAGRAPHS.
  1. What makes it this genre? S|T|I|N|C|T. 3 ideas / examples. Show how they are 'of the genre'. Compare our video to real media products.
  2. Applying some theory. Discuss what theories does it conform to. Love Now: Goodwin and Vernallis. Mania: Steve Neale and Rick Attman.
  3. Apply theory and discuss where/ challenged voyerism. We didn't sexualise our characters in our video, we didn't conform to media derived stereotypes.
  4. Final paragraph. CONCLUDE. A reflection on genre and what you learned / how it influenced our your creativity. Did we feel restricted or did we make it our own? Creativity, we wanted to push the boundaries in terms of our locations. Although our music video was POP genre and we felt a bit restricted, as a lot of pop music videos are very mainstream and basic, but e found ways to differentiate our video in terms of the extravagent locations we used and the settings. For example, talk about how we went to gods own junkyard because of all the bright lights and how this reflected a positive, happy vibe which is suitable for a pop music video.

1B Audience.

'Apply the concept of audience to one piece of your coursework'

PASSIVE
  • Hypodermic syringe
  • Cultivation / Drip Drip
ACTIVE
  • Schadenfreude
  • Smart Haus reception theory
  • Uses and Gratifications
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
  • Marxist Hegemony
  • Liberal Pluralism
Hypodermic Model.
Here the messages in media text are injected into the audience by the powerful, syringe - like media.
The audience is powerless to resist, therefore the media works like a syringe.

Drip Drip.
Examines the long term effects of media. For example, playing GTA won't make somebody kill someone but it may make someone feel less shocked by the thought of it, maybe more tolerant of it.

Liberal Pluralism.
Allowing anyone a voice and allowing different views and interpretations.

In our music video, we show multiple characters and we show them as equal. As there are only girls shown in our video we don't conform to any hegemonic views that woman are sexualised for men. we have an upbeat music video that involves site seeing and friends having fun together, we do not conform to any stereotypes. A lot of music videos are very dramatic and have hidden meanings throughout their narratives but we allow the audience to make their own mind up about our characters.

Uses and Gratifications.
Audiences use media for; Diversions, Escapism, Information Pleasure, Comparing relationships and lifestyles with their own, Sexual Stimulation.
The audience may view our video for pleasure and maybe escapism as it is very light hearted and an easy music video to watch.

Maslows Hierarchy of Needs.
RECEPTION THEORY

When a producer constructs a text it is encoded with a meaning or message that the procedure wishes to convey to the audience. In some instances audiences will correctly decode the message or meaning and understand what the producer was trying to say. In some instances the audience will either reject it to correctly understand the message.

In our music video, we showed photos of the characters together in photos to show the audience that they are friends, this allows the audience to understand why the girls are together rather than our artist, MYA, is just following the other two characters around.

The theory suggests that when a producer constructs a text, it is encoded with a meaning or message that the producer wishes to convey to the audience.

Staurt Hall identified three types of audience readings:
  1. Dominant - Audience understands what we want them to understand, they are interpreting it correctly, for example the audience understands that the three girls in our music video are all friends, and the video is filmed from MYA's point of view.
  2. Negotiated - The audience briefly understands what we are trying to get across, but are open to making up their own interpretations. They might recognise that the girls in the photos are the same in the video, but might not understand the purpose of them being there?
  3. Oppositional:

1B Narrative.

'Apply the concept of narrative to one piece of coursework'
  • Levi Strauss - Binary Opposites.
  • Barthes - Codes.
  • Torodov - Equilibrium.
  • Propps - Characters.
Introduction.
What was it? Music video/ Film opening, briefly describe the content / plot.

Levi Straus -  Binary opposites, night and day in Mya's music video.
Barthes - Enigma codes, questions you make the audience ask themselves. Audience intrigued my Mya, who is she? Potentially lead them to searching for Mya's website to learn more about her and also look at her social media accounts.
Torodov - Equilibrium - no disruptions in our music video so talk about how we use the lip syncing in our music video to break it up to keep the audience engaged and not bored. We challenge and develop Torodov's theory in a different way. We do not disrupt the equilibrium, we disrupt the narrative.
Propp - Characters. Throughout our video there were only the 3 girls in the film there were no men in our film or video, we were not trying to impress anyone, particularly boys.
